This trio is “A Rare Bird” indeed. It is rare because we live in an age where a boy raised in Southern California on Led Zeppelin, John Coltrane and J.S. Bach could travel in 1983 to Japan and become the first foreigner to graduate from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and Music in traditional shakuhachi. It is rare because we live in an age where another boy raised on Japan’s southern island of Kyushu could have an overwhelming desire to be a professional guitarist, leave the military academy, and teach himself jazz and Spanish guitar while working his way up through Tokyo “cabaret” pit orchestras. In 2016 these two musical adventurers were on a ship sailing from India to Greece and on stage in their first concert they found a surprising affinity between the American’s shakuhachi and Japanese’s jazz guitar. Finally this trio is rare because these two would meet yet another far-flung musical adventurer, who as a youth in Cleveland liked to “bang on things,” moved to New York in the 80’s, who later spent 35 years making musical pilgrimages to Brazil, Africa and India while working and studying in New York City with musicians from every continent. In 2018 these three musical adventurers formed The Aeolian Trio, and their first album is naturally called A Rare Bird. In this record you will hear their deep respect for the traditional masters of distant lands, alongside a homegrown love for the grooves and freedom of jazz, rock, pop and classical, that has been around all of them since their childhoods.

Aeolian Duo

Bruce Huebner Press Kit (Aeolian Trio) Biography

About the Aeolian Trio
The shakuhachi, a Japanese traditional bamboo flute that is rooted in Zen Buddhism, meets the guitar, a Spanish folk instrument that became a giant of jazz, rock and pop. In ancient times the shakuhachi was carried from the Middle East to Japan on the fabled Silk Road. Meanwhile, the guitar springs from flamenco and Renaissance traditions, and has antecedents in the Middle Eastern Oud. These seemingly disparate traditions separated by a two continents spring from the same cradle of civilization.

Now, centuries later, in California, Tokyo, and New York, Japanese guitarist Kôfû Suwa and shakuhachi master Bruce Huebner join New York-based percussionist Todd Isler to reunite these ancient traditions and bring them into the Twenty First Century. In their concert we hear how the melisma and phrygian “Spanish” mode is answered by the nuances of the Japanese miyako mode of the Zen bamboo flute, and how the rich rhythmic traditions of South and Central Asia underpin the fusion.

Musician Biography
Bruce Huebner shakuhachi
California- born Bruce Huebner studied shakuhachi under the late Goro Yamaguchi (Living National Treasure) at the prestigious Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music. He is the first non-Japanese to receive a master’s degree in traditional Japanese music performance at the university. He earned his master’s license from Chikuyusha, one of the oldest shakuhachi guilds, in 1997, and gave two solo shakuhachi recitals of Japanese classical music. In 1998 Bruce produced an instructional video on shakuhachi performance in English, and in August 2000 he led the Contemporary Sankyoku Ensemble’s six-state US Tour while releasing a solo CD of traditional shakuhachi music, “Song of Daybreak.” In 1999 Huebner co-founded the Jazz/World Music group “Candela,” which has recorded and performed to wide acclaim in Japan, as well as at venues in the United States, Canada and Europe.

A long-time Japan resident, Huebner is attempting to go where others have dared not: to create a straight, honest sound for the shakuhachi. Applying what he has learned through over 25 years of traditional study and Western training he performs a repertoire stretching from classical to jazz, including new works, as well as his own arrangements of music not normally associated with these instruments.

At times improvisational in nature, his music comes freely, in tune with the present while rooted the past. It is a fresh musical outlook for these ancient instruments – sometimes bringing to mind the mountains and rivers of Japan – at other times becoming a simple reflection on daily life.
